My design philosophy originates with the notion of connecting the intricacies of landscapes with the idiosyncrasies of how, and why, humans experience them and the kind of impact they have on their daily lives. My designs seek to reflect this dynamic as a source of wonder and inspiration. My eye is relentlessly drawn to the details, both those created by humans and those that occur in nature, and the delicacy of their interaction with one another. I approach each project prepared to observe, research and engage the site and client in order to create a landscape that has a strong cultural and contextual emphasis.
As landscape architects, I believe we are obligated to ask challenging questions in order to inspire individuals to institutions to find unexpected solutions. One of the many things I have learned from my experience both in practice and in my earlier work in cross-cultural facilitation and community development, is the value of creative thinking and working to empower ALL the voices in the room. Smart design depends on it. I seek opportunities to further my capacity in this area by working in vibrant settings that foster innovation and continue to ask questions that move the field of landscape architecture into positions of leadership in order for institutions, communities and individuals to use design as a source of innovation and empowerment.
